Is there such a thing as sustainable “slum” tourism?

The global phenomenon of slum tourism has recently been criticised more openly. Masses of tourists plow their way through the impoverished areas in developing nations to stare at poverty. The profit of these tours tends to end up in the business orientated operators – rarely with the communities interests in mind.

Yet a few operators in Indias Dharavi Slum boast with their social conscience – providing up to 80% of their revenue to the community in the shape of social-, educational and school-proejcts.

This concept allows for fierce competition and presents a path for respectful and sustainable slum tourism.
